My stepchildren (ages 40 & 36) Lost their mother to alcoholism yesterday. They did an intervention with her about eight years ago and she remained sober for two years. We were on excellent terms and I reached out to her to see if she needed any help or questions with anything. She relapsed about five years ago, her current husband divorced her 2 year because of this. She ended up with multi organ failure and on life-support yesterday. Unfortunately her brother and her mom had to make the decision to disconnect her. My heart just aches for them but they said they have grieved her death for the last five years. They’ve had no relationship with her in five years because she drank so much. They consider me their mother which I’m very honored. The sad part is I lost my husband 17 months ago to leukemia. So they lost both their parents now.
Prayers for all
Oh no. I'm sorry. I'll keep you all in my prayers. It sounds like you and your step children have a great relationship. I'm sure that will be a great help to each of you.
Yes we do. I’ll be with my step daughter and grandchildren this weekend!
I hope you all find time to enjoy yourselves. I know it's a rough time- but have fun.
That is a tough share; thank you for having the courage to open up about your family’s loss to this recovery community. Alcoholism is a disease that has no boundaries, and when left untreated through professional rehab/detox centers and recovery rooms, can leave lasting and painful scars on all the lives of those the disease touches. There are medical professionals, resources, and, perhaps, even Al-Anon and grief share groups that can help the family navigate through the grieving process.
I echo Charlie’s sentiment- prayers for you and your family. Thankfully Sue, they have you in their lives today.
