We are presented with a dilemma when NA members identify themselves as addicts and alcoholics or talk about living clean and sober, the clarity of the NA message is blurred. To speak in this manner suggests that there are two diseases, that one drug is somehow separate from the rest, requiring special recognition.
Narcotics Anonymous makes no distinction between drugs. Our identification as addicts is all-inclusive, which allows us to concentrate on our similarities, not our differences.
Perhaps I’ve been in NA too long? I cringed when I hear someone say “clean and sober” or alcoholic and addict”. Is this a character defect?

They are announcing this for themselves, not for your listening pleasure. Every time I introduce myself as Corey and I am an alcoholic, that is for me so I don’t forget where I belong again. I would say it’s probably a defect but shouldn’t be a hard one to change with an open mind. Have a great day!

I use to get reprimanded in NA meetings for saying alcoholic and addict or clean sober. It stuck with me and it bothers me that I allow something so petty get under my skin. I will work on this and add it to my step 4. Thank You.
