NA meeting today. Not looking forward to it.
Bummer to dread going to a Mtg! Not sure what time zone you’re in but my home group virtual meeting is an AA meeting with LOTS of NA peeps and is the most amazing meeting I’ve ever found online. 6:30am PST M-F and 7:30am Sat, Sun. Hit me back here if you’d like to try it and I’ll send ya the Mtg ID and passcode. SO much SOLUTION and LOVING people! I hate having to miss this meeting!
Why are you not looking forward to it?
Have you been before? It’s definitely awkward to be a newcomer, but I find the people in the meetings to be very friendly. Of course, I was hoping to go unnoticed my first few meetings lol. Push thru your fears/anxiety/uncomfortableness. It’s just your mind being negative. It takes some strength and courage to get clean and sober. You can do it
let me know the ID. i’m in eastern time zone
always get nervous to talk about it all
a few times. haven’t found a group i’ve stuck with for a while. i will get clean and then relapse and join different groups
I primarily go to NA. You don’t have to share in meetings - a lot of times listening, instead of thinking about what you’re going to share, is best. Our disease will tell us not to go to meetings, that they are bad, it will instill fear - anything so that we don’t go to meetings and recover. I mix it up and go to different groups to hear different people’s recovery.
i’m just new to admitting everything. i’m only 21 and didn’t know i had the disease until recently and it always scares me to open up about it. any advice in finding a sponsoring?
It’s def a struggle in the beginning. Sounds like you’re dealing with some shame issues too. F that shame stuff!! We all struggle. Relapse happens, and we all can learn from them. Hope you find your peeps

I'd suggest just go with an open mind and listen, even though you are dreading going. You'll probably find yourself relating to what others say if you look for similarities which might give you some hope or encouragement. As far as sponsorship, I've always heard to find someone who has what you want; someone who has a peace about them, or who finds joy in sobriety, or who you can relate to. There are plenty of younger folks who also got sober young and can provide support you as you navigate friendships in early sobriety. Keep pushing honey!
You don’t have to open up about your using past in a meeting - Just about what’s going on today. As far as finding a sponsor: there’s no rush, look for a woman who - has worked all 12 Steps already, is serene and not still all full of drama (not a sexist comment), and shares from her heart - not her ego. The primary purpose of a sponsor is to lead you through the 12 steps. That’s it. Not to be a therapist, not to be a BFF. If that happens it’s just a bonus. You may want to try an all women’s group. Single gender meetings are a good place to find sponsors because people share from their heart, and share stuff that they would not in a coed meeting. And it’s not a lifelong commitment. It’s just important to remember that a sponsor is just another addict, that has no special training. Don’t put them on a pedestal. You’ll do fine.
How was it? Was it better than you expected?
i only stayed for half. it was okay but didn’t help quite yet
Those are the ones you definitely need to go to, the ones you dread or just don’t want to go. Every time I didn’t want to go to a meeting cause of some excuse I would start to make in my head then I’ll go and that’s when I hear a message or I’ll see someone I haven’t seen in awhile or I’ll meet a newcomer! Remember meetings are for the newcomer and to share with the group anything new in your sobriety tool box! Share your struggles and what you’re doing about it. Boom mic
drop!
