Kirsten congrats on your sobriety!! I was never an AA fan but was introduced to Smart Recovery. They have meetings all over and a lot of options for zoom meetings. I myself found a great group that meets 3 times a week on zoom and 1 in person one. I hope this helps. It’s all about connection which we all need.

Meetup is a great site to meet with others. I'd recommend that. You aren't missing anything with aa. If I were still going to aa, I'd still be drinking.

AA is not the only 12 step program out there. You have to seek and find what works for you. Personally for me Narcotics Anonymous works better for me because it’s all inclusive when it comes to alcohol being considered a drug. There’s no program that is better or worse than the other. It’s a matter of personal preference. Try a bunch of different things until you find out where you feel comfortable. Don’t let anyone force you into a particular direction. The first step is admitting you have a problem which you’ve done. Now it’s time to find a program that you can call home and feel comfortable in!

Kristen, I'm reading drink like a woman right now! and searching for a sober society is what had me trying Lucid in the first place. I have no doubt AA helps some, but it is not one size fits all.

Welcome!!!

I started really excited about AA but lately my meetings turned too preachy for me. I do go but not as much. I did gain an amazing group of other sober friends through the meetings that I connect with. We help each other. There are really laid back great meetings out there just need to find them. I believe in god but some people in meetings just feel that God will fix everything, all my health issues. Well I know that I need doctors to fix my health issues. Some were just too much. Almost 25 months with a great recovery team and amazing friends all fighting for the same thing. I get no support from most of my family so can get very lonely on that end. Just do what feels right for you. Just stay strong. I do one day at a time because if not I get into a panic mood.

Hello Sunday Morning, This Naked Mind groups, Tempest, She Recovers, Recovery Dharma, SMART Recovery are all great places to start for meeting people.
And of course this app! I joined Loosid almost exactly one year ago and meeting people here was a vital part of my recovery.
There are definitely a lot of alternate options out there for processes of sobriety and for meeting awesome fellow sober people!

You're a drunk. AA is FULL of drunks. Seems like the "same lifestyle" as you, to me.

Again, it wasn’t for me. That’s why I am reaching out elsewhere. The amount of rudeness in this community has not been pleasant however.

I wasn't being rude. You are asking for help. You said it "wasn't for you". If you want help, explain how it wasn't for you or nobody is going to know how to help. FFS help us help you.

Hi Kristen :slightly_smiling_face: When you say you lack a connection with people who live the same lifestyle as you; does that necessarily need to coincide with helping you maintaining your sobriety? Is it possible to find groups of other sorts besides the ones all based on sobriety? You can form connections with people who hold similar interests too--per bio, yoga classes? In addition, seek couseling or therapy to manage the sobriety portion of your life. I know sobriety is important, but I don't believe it should be center stage when it comes to building connections or relationships... just a thought :woman_shrugging: best wishes

Welcome, i felt the same way about the fit. Happy days

AA isn't about meetings, it doesn't say anywhere in the big book to go to meetings. It talks about working the steps, how to keep in a fit spiritual condition, and nothing insuring immunity to alcohol more than intensive work with another alcoholic. Get a good sponsor to bring you through the steps, then continue to live in 10,11,&12. It's what works for me and I'm a heroin junkie. Meetings are mostly misery traps for new comers, there's so much bullshit that's why AA has like a 3% success rate, when it used to be 75%. I go to meetings to carry a strong message with depth and weight, not to learn anymore. And to offer my service as a sponsor to others, as someone did for me.

Also you said you have never been to one, so how would you know if it isn't for you? There are tons of decent ones. Some are trash and all war stories, but some are straight up all solution based, with OGs who have like 10-30 years sober, who know their stuff about living life sober.

Hi :wave:t2: AA wasn’t the right fit for me so I did a little research and found an All Recovery app called WEConnect and I love it, I hop on meetings everyday! You should check it out. I also friend requested you if you ever wanna chat with a sober friend :two_hearts:

I know someone here who likes The Lucky Club. AA is not for everyone. No shame in that. What ever works for you The only way is the sober way. Period
