New Identify after soberity?

Has anyone had trouble with their identify after going into soberity?

For me, I have had trouble trying to figure out who I REALLY am.

What do I stand for? What are more morals and values?

All that seemed to be in place when I had my addiction.. my drugs and alcohol gave me an identity.

Without them now I feel kinda lost.

I would love to hear other people's personal experiences.

This is one of the big issues that hits hard in early sobriety. We hid from who we were for so long. We became a different person through addiction and now we need to rediscover ourselves. Spend some time getting to know you. Fix the things in you that you don't like and keep growing. You got this.

Thank you bro!

Ever since getting sober I've noticed I'm VERY shy to talk and interact with people.

Before I was never like that.

Super interesting to battle this but Im going to keep pushing through :muscle:

Oh yeah for sure. Two years sober and figuring out who I am. I really like what I am finding out. This new guy is a lot more interesting than the drunk guy.

that’s awesome to hear brother!

Keep it up!

It has been great rediscovering myself. Instead of talking about all the things I was going to do, I am actually doing them now. I had a hard time at first not being able to talk to other people , but slowly through gaining my confidence back, meetings, and volunteering I am finding it getting easier. It is a great life today.

This was huge for me. When people talk about doing the work, this is part of what they mean (at least imho). I drank to escape answering these questions. Confronting them and getting answers is what helps keep you moving forward.

That’s amazing to hear how did you end up finding the answers to those questions?

It’s all about finding out who you aren’t.

I can see that being part of the process too. I’ve been sober from amphetamines for 1 year already (was on it for 5) and still don’t know who I am and it’s really fkin frustrating

Hi David, I’m new to this too and I’ve been making a list of my favorite things to do and I’ve already started, and scheduled some things. Maybe that could be a start? Some of mine are trying a new recipe, painting, watching YouTube videos (for me on painting, drawing, etc. Going to a workshop, getting a massage, watching my kids play sports. Also what do your kids like to do? Play board games? Have a catch with you? Read to them? What do you want to teach them that you haven’t had the energy for? Also I’m an artist and there’s a book I’ve started reading called the artist’s way. One thing they say is to have an adventure once a week. Mine is usually to go for a hike with my dog. But it gives me time to think positively. Maybe don’t worry so much about who you are just start doing some things and it will come to you.

David, what a cool question! Yup, not drinking anymore makes one rethink one’s identity for sure. What irked me that I’m now even more ‘nerdy’ than before. But now I realize I never really liked the old me anyway, and I love my newfound confidence and positivity. Getting a chance to reinvent myself is one of the things I like best about sobriety
