Hi everyone! I am new and 1 week sober from heroin and pain pills… any opiates really. I have never asked for help in the 12 years I’ve been addicted but i have gotten sober here and there. The longest 36 days. That was like 6 months ago. But here I am starting again and I came across this app. I am hoping to find some good people that can give me advice on those horrible days and I am hoping I can also give the same back! Can’t wait for this journey and to see where it takes me!
Meetings. Get plugged in with others like yourself.
The only thing that has stopped me from going is that I went to a couple some years back and it was the most triggering place for me. Hearing the stories and what it was like just made me want to run out of there and go use. And I did.. it sucks because I would’ve loved it was for me. So im thinking this is the 2nd best place to do that.
Well, you wanted suggestions. Just don’t use. If you did it before you can again.
Of course I love the suggestions.. I think maybe that one place just wasn’t it and I gave up way too quick. But you’re right, I need to find a meeting that doesn’t meet at a church for one. Is it true there are meetings in different places? Even like restaurants?
Also I wish it was that easy to just not use. Every addict wouldn’t be an addict if they could “just not use”
Zoom is a good start. Google local and virtual na meetings. Less religiousy
I think I would like that so much more.. I’m looking into it now
Welcome!
Thank you!
NP! I found this app in the beginning of my recent walk in recovery and it has been a great help. I don't have any other social media and when I can't make it to meetings or I am bored it's great to get on and read or post and encourage or get encouraged!
I also just found this app and I’m hoping that talking with other people going or has gone through the exact thing I am would really help me since meetings didn’t seem to help me. But that has been a while, and like I was saying earlier in this post that maybe I should find one that suits me. it just scared me when I went to the last one and it triggered me so bad that I left and went and used. So when that happens, you’re very hesitant to go to any meetings.
Amen to that.
I totally feel that. I was the same way years ago and went four years sober without meetings but eventually relapsed. I finally found a great meeting house and also a home group. Not sure on your age or anything but I love young peoples meetings. There is an app called "Meeting Guide" and you can put in your zip and find all the meetings in your area. Very user friendly. Meet someone there at a meeting and ask what others they frequent and if there are any, women's, young peoples, etc. Once I found a couple good ones it's def different. Also now I use the app when I travel just to hit up different meetings and meet new people.
I’m 37 so idk if that’s considered young but I look 25
I'm 37 as well so I'd like to consider it young
but yah, they usually are like 20s-40s but don't discriminate on age either, I've seen way older people at them too. The one I go to has a WhatsApp group chat and everyone stays in touch and posts when they are doing something so others can join etc...really great community
Meetings aren't for everyone. Many people here felt the same compulsions as you. A good support system of people you can trust is important. People who won't judge you for wanting to change. But focus more on the want and will to change. That has to be the motivation for you. I was a raging drunk from the ages of 19-34 and finally decided one day that I had to want more out of life. I'd tried to quit a bunch to satisfy the urging of others and it never worked. You get to be selfish in this regard for all the right reasons. Don't let folks tell you that you're doing it wrong or that you must do it their way. You don't. You just have to be willing to accept your human flaws and wake up every day trying to be better than the day before. You'll fall flat some days and that's okay. Wake up tomorrow and try again. If you adapt this mindset I promise you that a year from now you'll be someone you never thought you could be and then some. Don't lose sight of that vision.
Welcome!
