An alcoholic does not drink because they did not think the drink through, or because they did not call their sponsor, or because their sponsor didn’t say the right thing, or because they weren’t going to enough meetings, or because they were triggered by the behavior of someone else, or because it was the anniversary of their dog’s death, or because they went into a bar, or because they were angry, or because they were sad, or because they were happy, or because their Uncle Melvin was an alcoholic.
An alcoholic drinks because they are alcoholic. Full stop. It is oxygen to a restless, agonized soul. The setting and actors are irrelevant distractions.
The alcoholic who thinks their sobriety is based on occasions will have occasional sobriety.
