When the cravings come, when you feel your shadow inching towards being sneaky, when uneasiness enters your body.. sit with it. Try to ask it what it’s trying to tell you. What does it need? It’s very likely not a drink. Listen closely, like you would with a close friend. Care for it and show it to the light that is love.
Like a toddler throwing a tantrum, if you don’t provide care and compassion during those attention-seeking moments and cries for help, the discomfort will persist. And sure, distraction can be a valid tool to get through hard times, but it’s so important to also really sit with those feelings.

I found myself sneaking food today. It wasn’t alcohol, so I am glad- but it’s odd that I even feel I have to be sneaky and hide consumption of anything.
I feel like the sneakiness is part of the addiction. I’m addicted to nicotine and I really want to kick it, mostly because it’s something I hide from my kids. That part feels so seedy. But I think it’s my old addict self still holding on.

It is an interesting part of addiction. Like it knows it needs to hide. And that it is hiding other things. So much hiding.
