One week sober

This higher power search my take some time to find. I called it GUS for awhile. Great universal spirit. Helped me through rough times.
Church has helped me as well. I take what I need and leave the rest.

Hi do you have a sponsor yet? Just curious.. one of the things that help us best is to work with others on what's working for us.

No offense meant, but personally when someone says something like "it will take time to find" or "you'll get it soon", it feels condescending. And then referring to church as the place to find this said higher power, just comes off as more prosyletizing which some of us are allergic to. This is a point of tension for a lot of us. I don't need to consider a "higher power" for my sobriety. I simply need to realize two things. 1. I need help, outside of myself, with a sponsor and a peer group working towards the same goal, and 2. That my actions, good or bad, affect those around me, which is where accountability comes into play.

I'm a bit hot in this subject today, as my meeting last night, which is usually about sobriety turned into a meeting about prayer. Makes me wanna drink...

Congratulations! A week is huge. It sounds like you have the right mindset this time. Keep it up!

The ONLY requirement is a desire to stop drinking.

The following is a SUGGESTED program of recovery.

They chose the words carefully. I make a point of mentioning that often in my group.

You're right. I feel like it's overlooked, the part about it being suggested. Or it's like a "suggested but you know, do it anyway" just like the "god of your understanding, but you know, it's really just god".

It’s not perfect, but I’m glad I have it. In a small town it’s the only option. I just take what works for me.

Yeah man, I can dig it.

Just basic fellowship and accountability is working for me. Exchanging drunk scenery with sober scenery. Calling my sponsor every day. Doing the steps that are relevant to me.

Thank you all for your kindness and support. This thread does bring up the topic of spirituality in relation to recovery. Something I do ponder. Would be an interesting conversation topic

Wonderful. I tried the A la cart steps and after 18 months of sobriety became very miserable. I found a good sponsor and got me through all the steps. The misery has since lifted. I sponsor others and help guide them through the steps. It’s a really beautiful program. I’m also in YPAA’s which is young people of Alcoholics Anonymous. My county YPAA puts on events for young people and young at heart. It’s a great way to fellowship and be of service.

I would only be miserable by lying to myself and repeating some of those steps that i can't relate to. This whole program is based on honesty. I'm not gonna say things I don't believe, ya know?
