One year today.
There's no magic trick. Life still comes at you. Recovery gives you the tools to deal with it, though.
I have this problem where the more I grow, the more discontent I become. I think it's because I spent so much time wrapped up in destroying myself that that became my MO, my defining characteristic. I'm working on that.
Got a step, worked my sponsor. Strike that, reverse it. Did a lot of stuff that made me uncomfortable.. being uncomfortable is a sure sign that you're growing.
Got a job I love, getting my life together, but that's no path to happiness. The path to serenity and peace is something you have to find inside yourself. I'm just now really realizing that even though I THOUGHT I understood it already. I'll work on that in year two.
Recovery isn't for people who want it, or even for people who need it.. it's for people who WORK for it. You have to do the work.
Reach out if you need to. I saw a lot of good people die this year because they stayed silent when they needed help. You'll be helping the person you ask for help, as well, so don't deny them that.
I definitely don't have it all figured out, not by a longshot. But those are some of my takeaways from one of the craziest, hardest, best years of my life. I hope someone gets something from this. Message me if you want to talk. Unlike when I was using, I'm capable of being there for people now, including myself.
Good luck in your recovery journey! But it doesn't have much to do with luck at all.
