Only when…

“Only when”

The topic was discussed in a meeting last night. The idea is this…
You’ll only pick up when: (fill in the blank)

Did you say something traumatic? Was it for a celebration? Did you need to escape? (like most of us, this was our coping method)

If your answer was anything but; I wouldn’t or don’t need to. Then you haven’t completed step 1.

Personally I knew I was an alcoholic, my mentality was it’s just who I’ll always be and if you don’t like it I don’t need you. After many years of struggle I had completed step one before I knew what it was, I hit MY bottom. I knew I was ruining my life and decided I needed to change.

Asking for help was reaching out to the county AA hotline and finding a meeting. I’m proud to say the desire to drink has never come back since before I picked up that first chip.

Remember this friends, your journey doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s and our paths are very different getting here. What we do know is, using will only set us back. So try to remind yourself of that during not only the lows but also the highs.

Don’t think about the future, just today. You won’t use today. No matter the circumstances, we have control over right now. If you sit in meetings long enough you’ll hear every scenario of a tragic or joyous life event where someone did NOT pick up. You can do this!
