Opinion: I don’t drink any type of alcohol and I don’t do my drug of choice but once in a great while I smoke out weed for one session. Does that count against my sobriety timer?
We have had this same question come up several times. I know lots of people who are “Cali sober” or practice “Mary Jane maintenance” for me… nah you are all good. The addiction we suffer from isn’t about the substance per say, it was what the drug did to us. The obsession that our DOC had over us. If you can smoke a bowl and chill once in a while, and you don’t obsess, make terrible decisions, hurt others… as long as it doesn’t lead you back down a dark road back to oblivion. Be careful but your sobriety is all your own.
There is a huge problem with Cali sober or pot maintenance. Both come from the thought that pot isn't addictive. Be careful not to swap one addiction for another.
I saw a new one last night, "Intuitive Sobriety." That is the idea that you stay away from the drug you are hooked on and concerning everything else... you do you. The practitioners of this philosophy believe that as long as they don't do the one they were addicted to it ok. To me all three ideas are very hazardous.
Hi Christopher, first I want to say that your sobriety is just that, yours. So if you feel that you are still sober then that’s all that matters. Some more introspection may be needed though, why are you smoking? Is it to escape/numb out from what’s going on in your life? Because if that’s why you’re using then you are just using a different drug for the same effect. People are quite touchy about this subject, but in my opinion we are the masters of our own ship.
Yes of course. If you get high in any way you're not sober. No judgment. You don't drink or do your doc but you can't honestly consider yourself sober if you get high. That's just not the truth.
Yes
Wow, I’m shocked at the suggestion here. For me sobriety is about life or death. Christopher, you have to get real honest with yourself, do you want to be 100 sober from all mind altering drugs? One other thing I’d like to add, it’s possible that you’re not a real alcoholic. There three types, moderate drinker, heavy drinker and the real alcoholic.
The moderate drinker can l take or leave it at anytime in their life.
With zero consequences.
The heavy drinker will drink excessively when he or she drinks but with the right circumstances can stop, like getting married, having a child, or changing careers, even medical advice from their doctor.
The. There is the real alcoholic who can stop period. Has lots of consequences or not yet, but has the mental obsession, physical allergy and spiritual malady when it comes to alcohol and living life.
For me I was all three at one point. Then as this disease is, I progressed into the full on alcoholic. If you are unsure which one you are try doing some controlled drinking. Have one or two then stop. Try that again the next day. This may sound counter productive but it will definitely let you know which one you maybe. For this Real alcoholic I can’t have anything that is mind altering or a stimulant. Hope this helps get you on the right path.
Have a blessed day my friend
I believe in the existential approach myself. I stay away from words that imply absolutes such as sober as caffeine and nicotine are strong addictive drugs that are mind altering and abused throughout the world of treatment and recovery. Do what works for you!
