Opinion time. What’s your “key” to sobriety?

What’s your opinion on the most important piece to staying sober. I know there are hundreds or more things that lead to sobriety, but for you, what is the most important?

For me, it’s being teachable. Dropping the ego, admitting you don’t know it all, and opening yourself up to learning something. That’s numero uno, in my opinion.

Accepting that life just won't be the same after sobriety, it won't be as good and it won't be as bad. Accepting both realities.

Man, that is so right! I also know that a relapse will be the end of my life. Death was scarily close before I got sober.

The people you surround yourself with.

For me it’s acceptance. I’ve accepted that I can never drink or drug again. I’ve accepted that everything in life is temporary including triggers, cravings & emotions. I’ve accepted that the only thing I can control in this life, is myself. I’ve accepted that my higher power has a bigger plan for me than I ever had for myself. I’ve accepted that happiness is MY choice. And I’ve accepted that it’s all about progress, not perfection.

I love all of these comments! There is no right or wrong answer, we all have our own path to sobriety, I hope that someone new to sobriety can find their answer somewhere in here.

You surround yourself with people in recovery. Don’t hang out anyone that will jeopardize your recovery the matter what. I don’t care if you’re going to hurt someone else’s feelings. Ask yourself if you’re at risk for hurting yourself. You’re not cured after six months. Not a year. Not five years. I would rather spend a few hours a week at meetings for the rest of my life as opposed to thinking I can handle it on my own again and failing like I have done so many times. Get a sponsor. Work the steps. It is the only thing that is proving to work for me!!

For me it’s taking it one day at a time and not worry about when I’m gonna make my 90 day or 20 years. I want to focus just on today. I aim to be sober, Today!
