Put on the brakes?

What are some ways you've found to stop yourself in those "f-it" moments when you're heading to a bar/liquor store/a drink?

Before I even get to the f**k it’s I have a plan of action incase it happens. I’ll call my sponsor or a fellow addict/alcoholic etc. Remember you can’t get instant gratification in recovery, healing takes time, remind yourself how far you’ve came and why you started recovery to begin with. This is life or death. Keeping GOING. Support is everywhere :white_heart:

I try to step outside myself and play observer to my thoughts and feelings. I ask myself how im feeling, why I'm wanting to drink, what I think it will solve. And as someone else said playing the tape forward helps...remembering the shame and regret that would always follow a binge. I also have a "instead of drinking, how about you..." list of things to do because usually my drinking cravings come when I'm bored/lonely/depressed. The craving does pass and finding a way to preoccupy myself is always helpful. Stay strong and know you're worth another day sober!

Call my sponsor, friends, family. I am lucky to have three sober clubs within a 10 minute drive so I have been known to go there and get a cup of coffee.

Some days I stay sober out of spite. I look at my bank accounts, investment accounts, and budget spreadsheet with months out financial calculations constantly. I will never go back in the financial hole I used to call home!

You cab say "F-them" after to theose that doubt you, or have hurt you. Or "no, F THAT!" to the thing if if it's nor a person. Kind of like the AA version of "you can't fire me, I quit!!!"

Im fixated on numbers; I had a wall calendar where each day I put the number of days, months, etc. that I was sober. Eventually it grew and I just didn’t want it to go back to zero… And so it has not been reset in nearly twelve years…

I usually try to sit with the feeling and see why it’s coming up. Then once I know why, I can respond. If I’m lonely, I’ll call a friend; if I’m tired, I’ll have a nap or chill out; if I need to get rid of energy because I’m anxious, I’ll go for a run or hit a heavy bag for awhile or something like that. It’s good to have lots of options.

During treatment they gave us acronym h.a.l.t. Make sure you’re not hungry, angry, lonely, tired.

If I drink or drug I die. Death man. You’ll let a substance a liquid with no soil or not alive take your life how pathetic. I’d think about that and get my stuff together and understand I’m not about to let some substance take me down. It’s so cheap to go drink. Our lives are worth so much more then a cheap drink

Set your intention for the day. Ask the universe to take away your obsession and tell yourself you will not drink today. If a craving is bad, jump in the shower. Craving will pass by the time you are done. Eat something sweet or super sour. I also have been known to throw a literal temper tantrum alone on my bed :joy::joy: sounds stupid but it works :joy::joy:

I remember my last drunk, and the fact that it nearly ended in alcohol poisoning.

reflecting helps me , think about one of your worst drunk nights/hangovers/etc and ask yourself is it worth it , if the answer is no then enjoy a seltzer and a refreshing morning :pray:t3:

Remember where you’re going, where you were and where you want to be . One bad day or week, doesn’t mean you’re failing. There are people waiting for you to succeed so you can tell them how to get where you are. Anyone can give up, that’s easy. You are walking this path for a reason.

I just keep pushing, and go second by second. I also look at what my life will look like if I give up.. and what it means for myself and my child, and all the people around me that I love
