Question… how do you turn off your negative self talk? Yes, I’m sober now and putting the hard work in but I still feel for stuff I’ve done. Idk
The reason your windshield is bigger than the rearview mirror.. it is because we need it that way. To move forward in life we need to look ahead, not behind. The rear view mirror is small and only shows us where we were, or have been. It is ok to look back and glance at it. Consintrate on the here and now, look forward and see how you will progress. We can't change the past, we can only look at now and what is ahead of us. Look in a mirror and say...good job, I am sober and give yourself a pat on your back.
Were you sober when you did it?
Working the steps will teach you to let go
Good morning, broken masterpiece
The name you chosen for yourself on this app
Speak for itself. Please start looking at yourself as a broken masterpiece. Then realize all the stuff you did in the past you did because you were broken. Then realize the person you are now without the drink of the drug. Would never do the things you did when you were drinking and drugging.
By working through the steps and doing an honest fourth and fifth step six and seven step getting rid of the character defects and then an eighth and ninth step make an amends to people we have harmed. And also make an amends to yourself and forgiving yourself for the things you did in the past that’s how we HEAL
100% agree with Troy. It was through the steps that I found and continue to develop my relationship with my Higher Power. It was through dumping the wreckage of my past and leaving it there in steps 4 and 5 that I began to love myself. It was through making as many amends as I possibly could, and continue to make as God puts people in my life who I've wronged. It is through daily prayer and meditation that I realized that my God isn't the angry, vengeful God of my upbringing. It is through helping others, and sharing my story, and guiding men through the steps as was done for me that I find purpose. I can honestly say today, on my 2 year anniversary of sobriety, that I love myself. It's here for the taking, I had to dive into AA head first and God willing, I won't ever have to go back to hating myself again.
Amen Andrew

Such a solid question! Amazing answers too. I guess it’s a marathon and not a sprint to life a healthy, clean and clear lifestyle. But it’s never easy like the question was posed I also have those voices today.
That is the difference then
You overwhelm it with positive self talk.
Excellent question. My brain never stops. Constant self talk these days. Not always negative but always thinking. Most have success with meditation. For me it helps at times but my brain is excessively over active.
The solution for me was in AA, and getting a sponsor, getting a home group, getting a service position within my home group, and working the 12 steps while reading the Big Book with my sponsor. Slowly over time I began to stop thinking so much about myself, and started thinking of other people and what I could do to help them. It works, and has worked for millions of people just like me all over the world!
