Somebody who has what you want. Somebody you trust. Most importantly, Somebody you are willing to tell the entire truth to, without omitting anything. The magic of the steps for me came with telling the truth and it took the right person to get me to tell everything. Good luck on your journey.

I’m not a big fan of sponsors, never had one and am almost 3 years sober and attend AA weekly. I have a doctor and therapist who are EDUCATED in these things. I know sponsorship helps a lot of people and if it works for you, great. But it’s not a requirement and sometimes people push it like it is.

I agree with what Brett said but to add something that was really important to me was to find someone willing to call me out. I've had a sponsor that just went along with what I said and coddled me, and it was more detrimental than anything else. The best sponsor I had- met me with blunt honesty and often put me in my place. I truly believe that I would not be about to celebrate 3 years sober if it weren't for the reality checks that sponsor had given me early on in my recovery.

Someone who speaks and lives recovery. In their shares I don’t hear complaining or negativity, I hear solution. Someone who is actively working the program: steps, commitments, shares, and has sponsees.

Yea agreed. I also forgot something very important. Find a sponsor who also has a sponsor. Like Jen said, recovery is about accountability and nobody is above it no matter how much time you have. Also, you can't sponsor someone if you've never been sponsored and shown how to go through the steps. So if you ever plan on giving it back and taking somebody else through the steps you want to have been taught by someone is also accountable for their sh**

I look for someone who has a sponsor, and is actively doing step work. My first Sponsor was amazing her opening statement to me was she’s not here to be my friend my relationship counselor or my financial advisor she’s here to help me find a set of tools that can help me live life on life‘s terms and find a higher power whos hands I can rest in today.
