Quitting alcohol

I am brand new to the this app and decided I need to quit drinking. Has anyone had experience just stopping I only drink after work but it can be a bit much 10-12 beers without rehab or a detox program? I’m not asking medical advice just anyone’s experience in a similar situation. Thanks !

It's possible I did it for a week prior to going to rehab... but I was sober when I went in... for me, I'd been wanting to quit for years... it had its grip on me... my Dr told me I was gonna end up killing myself if I didn't quit... so I did and then went thru a 30-day program...

But don't try to do it alone... if u don't tell anyone, you have no accountability, and it's just that easy to "one more night."

Good luck, drink lots of water and exercise...

Thanks for encouragement. I will definitely be honest with those around for accountability. I guess tomorrow is going to be a new day and start.

Thanks again!

I went cold turkey, after loosing my kidney. It starts with where you want to be and who you surround yourself with. :v:🏻

I'm alcohol dependent and it's a bumpie road going cold turkey, if your a heavy drinker you might want to hook up with your doctor to ensure your safety as far as DT's. I had to be medically managed off alcohol for my safety. Hopefully you have a strong support system to help you as well. You can do it friend...

Hit me up if u need to sir...

I told my doctor I was worried about detoxing but didn't want to go into a medical detox program and she put me on a medication to reduce the risk while the alcohol left my system so I was able to detox at home.

Aside from the physical stuff, as they say, the opposite of addiction is connection, so finding a supportive group of people (which may or may not include professionals such as therapists) is also really important to staying stopped. Good luck!

Thank you

I’m not sue if I am alcohol dependent. This is the longest stretch for me without taking a break from drinking (7-8months) I did mention to my dr about stopping and how much and she acted like it wasn’t a big deal which made me nervous because of stories of people going cold turkey.

I will definitely be reaching back out to my dr tomorrow. That seems like a smart way to approach this for safety reasons. Thanks for sharing. Makes me feel like there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Definitely let a few friends know that you’re stopping so they can check on you and make sure you’re OK. I’m really surprised your doctor didn’t think it was a big deal. That would make me nervous as well. Just make sure you are safe physically. That’s what’s most important. Proud of you and wish you the very best of success and healing. You can do it!

It’s all up to you. Making connections are having friends help keep you accountable help, but in the end it comes down to you and your desire. My first handful of attempts some I did alone, some I went to aa and made connections. But in the end I snuck back out and hid my drinking till I pushed them all away. I know people who’ve quit without any rehab, and many with different levels of rehab. You just gotta dive deep and ask yourself “why is it time to quit” and never forget your why.

And welcome to this community Justin!

I have to quit drinking. I drink to get drunk. I guess that’s part of the depression too.

I suggest the rooms of AA. It has worked for me my friend
