Really struggling with finding the balance between taking accountability for my mistakes & still being gentle with myself. Does anyone else struggle with this?
Everyday…. But it gets better with time. Be kind to yourself.
I assume you are talking about past mistakes. If so, heck yes! At times I can come to terms with the fact that I did some horrible things and forgive myself. Yet the very next day I’m haunted by these very same mistakes and beating myself senseless! It’s clear why it’s necessary for me to do my best to live one day at a time, and practice a daily program of recovery. Many of the things I come to terms with today, I’m absolutely tortured by the next day. I did some really bad things while my addictions had a hold of me. Today I’ve got over 9 months of sobriety. I’m not that same person who was completely insane anymore. I can be if I don’t take care of myself, but I choose not to be. Im responsible for my past behaviors, but they don’t define who I am today. Hope we can all learn to take responsibility for our past, yet be kind to our new selves:pray:
That was so beautifully said, thank you!
I am my own worst critic. I will beat myself up for the smallest mistakes; ones I would just shrug off if someone else did them. At times I have to do the man's prayer from Red Green Show..."I'm am man; but I can change. If I have to. I guess." I say it to remind myself to not take myself too seriously.
