I just needed to get this off my chest. I’ve noticed several people commenting on posts, mine included, that medication is not necessary. Comments basically saying, “don’t start taking one drug in place of another,” “you don’t need medication.” Comments like that are so incredibly harmful. At this point in MY life, and for MY recovery, I DO need medication. Medication that I’ve been prescribed by a doctor, and that I’m taking as prescribed. I would not still be sober without it. And yet still, it plants the seed in my mind that maybe I’m not as strong as other people are. Maybe if I were stronger, and more determined, I wouldn’t need to rely on medication. Which is absolute bullsh*t, but that’s anxiety manifesting in an already anxious mind. So in summation, some of us do need medication. And it’s nothing to be ashamed of.
Your sobriety should be your choice. Meds… no meds… You make that determination. People have their own opinions.. take them or leave them again that’s your choice. I for one am happy to see you back. You do you! Whatever you need to stay sober! Rock on girl!
I used to be a therapist at a medication assisted treatment clinic for opiates and alcohol. Some people do need it, some don’t. Nothing wrong if you do. As long as taken as prescribed
I'm not sure what "I'm not as strong as other people" really means. I feel like that's super subjective, and everyone has their own fight going on. And what's strong to some people might not be to someone else. I wouldn't worry about it though, worry about your life and what You need to be a better person, a healthier person, whatever that means to you. I became an addict/drunk because I was self medicating. Lots of people do this. Some people just do those things simply for pleasure, to feel good in the moment, being high feels good.
I do think that lately there have been a few people popping on here who are simply attention seekers, and not much else, and that kinda sucks because getting/staying clean and sober is hard work, and alot of us are sick of being sick and tired and starting over and feeling like shïtheads because of our actions while in using phase.
What I'm saying is, for some people, medication seeking absolutely IS bullshìt, they are just med rolling to get another high. I know this, because I was one. The constant "look at me" society we are in + high chasing is not really helpful(to me). I genuinely care if people can get sorted out and live a better life. Not because I love people so much, but because I know how low and awful it can get and what it does to a person and how hard it can be to climb out, especially without a kick in the a$$.
We are all much healthier and happier if the person sitting next to us is also healthy and happy.
I completely understand that there are people who seek medication & take medication for other reasons. The point I was trying to make was, I think it’s harmful & counterproductive to lump everyone into the same category. Such as “oh, he or she is taking medication, so they must be trying to get high.”
Thanks so much, Tim. It’s great to be back.
If my psychiatrist thinks there is something she could prescribe that would help me in my road to recovery, I trust her. I’ve been seeing her for nine years.
LOL y’all showing your true colors I guess. He|l truly is other people. Guess I’ll take my attention seeking a$$ somewhere else. LM@0

… what Michael said. I came here to said it, but he already said it better, lol.
Rachel I also need meds. Like, NEED meds lol. It doesn’t mean we are weak or drug seeking. Some people need extra help and there’s nothing wrong with that. In fact, I think we are strong because we see we need extra help and want it so we can be better
Rachel!!!! Thank you for sharing this! I understand what you’re going through!
Try not to take what people say on here personal. Remember we are all sick people.
I had to take medication for the first year of sobriety. I took Lexapro. I can tell you that was the best thing next to going to a residential treatment facility for 30 days. My moods were extreme. Super high highs and super low lows. But with medication I was what the call flatlined. My highs and lows were straight across the board. I was able to function in daily’s activities and stay sober. I knew deep down that I wouldn’t have to take them for ever.
It’s been over two years since I took prescription medication and I feel really great!
What I found out is that my bodies chemistry was out of balance due to the drugs and alcohol I consumed. Medicine helped my body regulate the chemicals that were off. As I began healing I also began to eat healthier foods and exercise more. This combination really helped shape who I am today. And working the steps of AA.
Now the flip side to what some may be saying. There are some of us that switch one drug for another. This maybe true. As an active member of AA and a sponsor I can say that it’s none of my business what you take. All I can say is look at your motives, ask yourself why am I taking these prescriptions drugs? Are they helping? Am I being honest with myself and my doctor about my symptoms and the side effects?
The only way I stayed away from drinking was I was put on a drinking medication. I have medication for various conditions, nothing is a narcotic. You do what ever works for you. I was physically addicted i needed withdrawal medication. Please everyone has their opinions take what you need and leave the rest. There is no right or wrong. Good luck with your program. Reach out go to meetings and by all means keep posting here.
At the end of the day. It's YOUR sobriety. Don't let strangers run your life
You have absolutely nothing to be ashamed of Rachel! I can relate to your journey. All we can do is take it one day at a time, one step at a time and one thing at a time. Just keep doing the next right thing!!!
I’ve always needed something. So yeah. I try to ignore ignorance and there’s a lot going around everywhere.
