Music about recovery
I’m reading through Catherine Gray’s book right now and she brought up music about recovery so I thought I’d share some of my personal favorites from this long (and very arduous) battle with booze. Enjoy and please share some of your own!
1: Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit -
Jason’s sober and his most recent album, Reunions, is all about recovery. One song in particular sticks out and I think why should be obvious. Give a listen to ‘It Gets Easier’ and try not to laugh along to his ruminations about waking up to dreams (err, nightmares) about drinking and wishing a cop would pull him over when he’s driving sober.
Sample:
“Last night, I dreamed that I'd been drinking
Same dream I have 'bout twice a week
I had one glass of wine
I woke up feeling fine
And that's how I knew it was a dream”
2: The National - This is the Last Time
This was the song that I listened to on what I thought would be the last day that I picked up a cigarette (I’ve managed to stay over a year off of the sticks since my last lapse, but still #honesty). I love this song (this band, really) and this song feels appropriate.
Sample:
“Oh, when I lift you up
You feel like a hundred times yourself
I wish everybody knew
What's so great about you”
