Recovery thinking

I know when I go into meetings and we talk about our personal experiences and how they relate to the principles taught in a 12 step program, I am reminded I have and other others have a disease/mental health condition that will route me into using drugs and alcohol to artificiallly medicate, isolate and simultaneously destroy my life. Sharing in recovery and listening in recovery is not about reliving trauma. It's about NOT ever experiencing trauma like that in my life, ever again. That's one way, I know how it works. :relaxed: PEACE.

I’m one of those freaks that enjoys meetings as well. I don’t enjoy them all, but I found a group that meets outside at an equestrian park. We start every meeting off with a 5-10 minute meditation. Sitting outside and looking at the trees, the grass, the sky, the horses, birds, squirrels etc, that just calms my crazy overthinking mind. We tend to attract a more spiritual and open minded crowd. In the past I have found that if I don’t go to meetings, I “forget” that I can’t control alcohol/drugs/addictive behaviors. I slowly begin to only remember the good times. I slowly start thinking that this time will be different. I can work most of the other steps of the program without meetings, but meetings is where I get reminded about step 1.
At first I went 5-6 times a week. Now I’ve found a little better balance for me. I go to a few meetings a week, along with individual and couples therapy.

Thanks for sharing that with me man! You are so right that some meetings feel like a waste, for one reason or another. And sometimes it is hard to find a good meeting, but that's usually when I haven't been going and am back searching again for the right meetings. Yea, I have one Sunday night right now that starts off with a meditation. That's so helpful to just organize and get my spiritual mind right. Helps me think through what I need to bring up in the meeting so that I can feel as good as possible when I walk out after the meeting! I've got the bug, I hope it lasts, I think it might this time!
