So I just started using marijuana a few weeks ago

So I just started using marijuana a few weeks ago. I only smoke it in the evening. I feel like it’s been really helping me with my anxiety and has uplifted my mood. I smoke Sativa. As a person 8 months sober from alcohol, do you think it’s ok that I use marijuana? What are your thoughts?:woman_shrugging:t4:

I’d speak to ur primary care physician, psychologist, psychiatrist or any medical profession and have them oversee ur medicinal sativa use. That way it’s just not you managing it on your own. Given the properties of the strain there is an upside to its healing properties. I’d be very mindful of the dosage as well. LMK how it works out

I’m 13 months sober from drugs & alcohol but I still use cannabis medicinally. I think of it the same as how I take my Prozac or Lamotrigine. If it’s prescribed to me and helps then I’ll take it. They call it “California Sober.” Like anything, it’s person to person. For some alcoholics, taking a puff of pot means they will surely drink. For me this is not the case. I’m open and honest about it with myself, my sponsor (when I had one, I’m looking for a new one again), and my Goddesses. And being honest to those entities is what’s important. I tried to remove cannabis from the equation and my eating disorder came back immediately. To say the least I can’t have that happen, so I smoke for an appetite for breakfast and to sleep. I used to smoke all day everyday but now I just use it more medicinally. Again, it’s person to person & it’s really not the right path for some people. Just need to know yourself and be honest with yourself and your higher power :+1: you’re not alone, this was something I was curious about too

I guess it's not a problem til it is. Alot of stories start the same. "I started drinking occasionally, only at ________, because it helped me relax, and then it progressed" etc etc.

"California sober" is basically, well, bullsht.

Yes I use it medicinally and it’s been a game changer. I feel so much better. It helps with anxiety and my depression. I have no desire to drink ever again🙂

It doesn’t give me any desire to drink. I actually think it’s very helpful to me. But I can see how it could be detrimental others if smoking is a trigger to drink.

The "trigger" is feeling good. Maintaining homeostasis. If you are maintaining homeostasis by using something else, then you're just trading one harmful thing for another. It's basically just not a problem "yet". You are using something else to fake coping.

Do you think it’s harmful? Even if you use it medicinally?

I used to use Dilaudid "medicinally". It dulled the pain and made me feel "better", know what I'm saying?

Everything in moderation, people say. But how do you moderate feeling good(the opposite of feeling like sht)?

Marijuana is addictive too. You need to make sure you keep your doctor in the loop on usage. If it isn't legal in your state then stop smoking it all together

It is legal and I have a medical card.

Marijuana and moderation doesn’t work for me. It starts with a thought that the movie I’m going to watch would be much better if I was high. Next, the music I’m listening to would be much better if I was high. And so it goes. A little before bed would help me sleep. Then it’s every night to fall asleep. Dinner would certainly taste better after a few hits. The beach…I mean who doesn’t want to get stoned before going to the beach!! Dinner with rents…it’s an absolute must!
This is how it has always been for me. It starts out with a sincere desire to only use it “once in a while”. It always ends up F-ing up my life. It’s crazy to think that it makes everything in my life so much better, but then it stops working. I’m so irritable without it, and life is no longer enjoyable with it. If that sounds like you, then maybe you’re better off finding a way to enjoy life without it.

Was the prescribing doctor aware of your sobriety? I’m surprised they would write a script knowing that.

It provides the same escape alcohol does, and changes your mood. It’s a no for me.

In that case just keep in mind that 30% of Marijuana users will become addicted to it

In AA, chips are given for varying lengths of sobriety. On those chips the phrase
“to thine own self be true”. This goes along with the phrase “it’s an inside job”.
The point to these phases as I understand them, is the only you know if you getting messed up. You know if you are truly sober. I can go to a meeting and say I’m 30 years sober even if I am not. But by lying I am only fooling myself. Only me and my HP know what I’m up to. I hope this helps.

I think that’s great. I too use marijuana, green bud and edibles. My addiction is alcohol. Not weed! :call_me_hand:t3::v:t3::sunglasses:

My first sponsor recommended I use the following question when I wasn’t sure what to do:
“Is what I’m about to do taking me closer to or further away from the first drink?” That, along with the 11th step should point you in the right direction.
