So I relapsed a few months ago and I relapsed hard enough to get fired from my job. I was there for 9 years and I have never been fired from a job before. I went to treatment and am continuing AA. I took some time off before looking for another job. I have now been offered an opportunity from a former colleague and would love to work for them. My question is: how do I explain this? I don't want to lie bc this person is my friend and I don't want to put her in a tough position. But I also don't want to lose this opportunity bc it is in my field and I need work. Any advice would be appreciated
Oh that's tricky. I've been there. I was elusive at first, coy with explanations that I was working on myself and my health, but I was discovered and let go. I should have been honest but I felt so much shame and stigma that I was afraid. Now, it's my strength and I'm not afraid of it anymore. I think it depends on your recovery status and how well you and that co-worker are. Best of luck!
You don’t have to disclose anything.
Truth I believe is best
I think we can be honest without volunteering information when trying to get a job. I wouldn't lie though
Never Lie never be ashamed of your disease always be honest straightforward lies have a funny way coming back and bite you in the backside
Keep your side of the street clean.
Be honest if asked. If it’s the same there as it is here, a job can’t disclose why you got fired, just that you were and the dates you worked there.
I agree

It all comes down to your INTEGRITY and your recovery program. After all both hinge on rigorous honesty. Either you have it or you don't. Keep in mind it's an anonymous program. Don't blow your anonymity and your sobriety over it. Don't provide information that is not pertinent. If asked about it then share about it. Just remember loose lips sink ships.
