So my grandfather died last week, he was 96 years old… everything about his funeral was triggering. Being around my family, my very sober very Christian family should be comforting right? Absolutely not the case. I made it through but I still can’t shake the desire to drink. I just found this app yesterday but it’s nice to “say it out loud” somewhere.
Hang in there Staci, great job staying sober
Hi Staci! Glad you found us! This is a great place to share these feelings. Family is most certainly a major trigger for most of us. I’m sober 14 plus months (this time). I’ve been doing a lot of work trying to heal and change. Yet, I too am so triggered by my family. I just never felt safe around them. This goes back to being a kid. Even with all the healing I’ve done, I’m still always expecting someone to open up their big mouths and say something “inappropriate” that will cause me “harm”. Makes me not want to be around them. Trying to get over these feelings because I know they love me very much. It’s very conflicting and confusing. Regardless, we choose to acknowledge and address these feelings, and choose healthier ways to deal with them. Nice job of getting this out of your head! Thanks for sharing.
Sorry for your loss. Stay strong
Prayers & Strength. You’ve got this!
Unfortunately, death is a thing that happens around recovery. Although it wasn’t recovery related, it’s still hard. It’s one of those things I try and remind myself to do the right things while I’m still here. Sorry for your loss. You can do this
I don’t even like my Christian family and I’m Christian. Messed upness is all over. You will only hurt yourself so meetings and reaching out is great!
You got this. I’m glad you made it through the ‘family’ challenge
I’ve got almost 2 years and haven’t seen any immediate family. I’m sure I’ll be feeling you the next time it’s my turn.
