So… sponsors and gender. I get that whole “opposite gender sponsor to avoid ‘Step 13’”. But what if you’re not straight? I’m not attracted to men, and my whole life I’ve been more comfortable being honest and taking feedback from men than women. Too much trauma with females. I’m nervous if I get a female sponsor I’ll fall into old habits, start lying and ultimately fail.
It’s more of a guideline than a rule. The bond is what most people are a bit worried about. For some, myself included, there is a special kind of bond that is formed between sponsor and sponsee. I have told that man things I have never revealed to anyone. That trust takes something strong. Do what makes you feel comfortable. It’s your sobriety.

I agree with Tim, it's who you feel comfortable with. I never sponsored anyone probably because I am not a 12 stepper. To me a sponsor is similar to a therapist you have to talk about anything. It's between you and your sponsor and what you are both comfortable with. Reach out anytime
