The cultural impact of alcoholism in my family has been huge. The more I investigate and recover I am finding that “drinking is what we do” was all a lie and an excuse to condone addiction. The lie caused great damage in my family. The Irish also drink tea. This cultural belief is far less destructive, so I’m sticking with that one. Proud tea drinking Irish girl here.

People do what they need to to cope or even get by. Drinking alcohol was healthier than drinking water at times historically and taking the edge off of poverty probably felt good. As children we trust what our parents do. Only natural. I had a lot of fun drinking for a really long time until I started to use it for all the wrong reasons. Eventually the mental addiction became physical addiction. Today I’m trying to find peace in spirituality and nature. Congratulations on your journey.

I understand the culture aspect a lot. Tea is much more delicious than alcohol anyways! What’s your favorite? I like earl grey chamomile and regular Lipton lol
