Meetings don’t work for me, this app doesn’t work, I think I have a larger underlying problem of mental illness that has me self medicatin… does anyone else have experience on this?
I had anxiety attacks. I was told to avoid alcohol because it is bad for anxiety. Stopping drinking is a good first step. Finding a therapist and possibly psychiatrist is a good next step
I think a lot of folks, myself included, have underlying thoughts or beliefs that we medicate against with alcohol or other stuff. For me it ends up making me feel worse which is one of the reasons I'm putting the booze down. I've got a really great therapist and that helps mucho.
Meetings don't cure anything. Try getting a sponsor and working the steps. Just going to meetings is like buying an empty liquor bottle.
For me, meetings are about fellowship and staying connected. The actual program is the 12 Steps. I enjoy the meetings I go to but the true growth for me has come from working the steps.
Mental illness could definitely make you self medicate. Please check with a medical professional
I drank and used drugs bc of my anxiety, and because something just always felt “off” in my brain. dr said I have ptsd trauma add anxiety depression. Gave me meds for it but had to stop taking them eventually bc it was a benzo. Some meds help for awhile but not long term. I’m trying to figure out how to stay sober from alcohol but it hasn’t worked so well for me so far. I’ll get a month or two in and something snaps in me and I go on a bender. Next step for me is vivitrol shot.
