Sobriety Can Be Sobering

I’m definitely experiencing the distancing of friends since embarking on the journey. I find myself becoming bored with the conversation while day drinking Iced Tea along side my vodka soaked friends. On the other hand, they have probably have found me to be too boring to hang out with anymore. So, I stopped going out and they stopped inviting me. I miss them, but not the drunken messiness.

Good morning, Mike! First off, welcome and congrats on another day sober! It’s tough when friends start to drift away as you focus on your sobriety but it sounds like you’ve made a healthy decision for yourself. That feeling of being out of sync with people who are still drinking is so relatable. I think it’s because you’re seeing life through a clearer lens now and what used to be fun might not feel the same anymore. It’s okay to miss them but also to recognize that their way of living isn’t aligned with where you’re headed.

You’re making space for new, more fulfilling connections. It’s not easy at first but you’ll find people who understand and share the path you’re on. Keep moving toward the life you deserve!

That is a hard situation the majority of us find ourselves in. I find that it makes me more aware of how I sounded and acted when I was drinking and that’s not a pretty picture. It does find you in a lonely place but encourages many to find people who just don’t drink/use or are on the same path as you. You’ll relate to them more now that you’re sober as opposed to your partying friends. It’s not easy but it’s a healthy life changing path for you to follow.
