Sobriety is so hard!!!! I have gotten past the worst part of recovery. But Jesus, I’m so anxious I can’t hardly stand it. Will someone please help me?
Take an Epsom salt bath, go for a walk or run or just stretch then take the bath. Relax as much as you can. Drink water.
Once you walk through it you'll feel better and more confident!
I try to find something to pass the time with, and just keep my mind busy. Getting over the initial anxiety can take some time, lot of self-work and taking the steps. Find someone sober to chat with and relax, take Kelly's advice
Drink some water Get up and go for a walk. When you come back inside drink some water and write down everything you observed on your walk.. sounds, smells, other people, dogs, squirrels clouds
Hey Jess…
You could always discuss anxiety and recovery with your doctor. Sometimes anxiety is just part of recovery/ life, and other times, it could be more mental health related. In any case, doesn’t hurt to talk to a medical professional familiar with addiction.
When I’m anxious and able to I’ll go for a run. It always works for me. If I can’t run, I focus on my breathing. It helps me feel physically less anxious
All the things people have already mentioned are great. What kind of hobbies do you have?
Early sobriety sucks. It took me about a dozen times of picking up and stopping before I got on this run. LOTS of great ideas and help here.
I was prescribed gabapentin for cravings and anxiety; it was really a game changer for me. A lot of why I drank was to self medicate my anxiety. Treating that was like flipping a switch on my desire to drink.
Best I can say is it does pass, also the best things in life are never the easiest. Keep your head up one day at a time
Get plugged in with people in the program. As much as you may not want to, go to lita of meetings and keep looking until you find some people you connect with. Get a sponsor and start telling your story and getting some direction. Get a service obligation ( making coffee or getting or cleaning up after meetings). You need community. You can't do this alone.
I've always been a writer/journal er. Get a book and write out your feelings, thoughts, whatever. Dump it all out. It doesn't even have to be legible when you are done. Just write as fast as your brain is moving.
Attack the paper, not yourself.
