Someone at a meeting the other day told me that

Someone at a meeting the other day told me that he is “California sober”. Hmmm. Not sure what I think about this. I was California sober for a long time, and I can say that being completely sober was so much harder for me to maintain than the other option. It also sent me back out after a few months of smoking weed. I’m curious as to what your thoughts are on this! Let me know!!

I do know that weed always got me high, not sober

Same here lol. And if it’s a mental disease, aren’t you just feeding your mental disease by giving it something to get High off? Wouldn’t that immediately trigger the phenomenon of craving? It did for me :woman_shrugging:

I couldn't have said it better, lol!

Personally I prefer sober. I'm sure some people can use cannabis successfully. I know I'm not one of those people and don't want anything messing with my judgement or willpower. For me it's a slippery slope and I choose not to risk it.

It’s just keeping the door open to get back to use again. Sober is sober no mind altering drugs.

I was just genuinely curious about thoughts on California sober verses completely sober since I’ve practiced both kinds of sobriety. Not necessarily this one guys personal journey with sobriety.

I am California sober then too because I am on prescription pills for bipolar and anxiety. I have a bad mental Illness and if I’m not medicated for it, I literally lose my mind lol. So I feel like for me personally, I need to be on prescription pills. :woman_shrugging:

Bahahaha

I have heard mixed on this. I was given a medical pot card because of chronic pain. I waited and waited to use it but then I did. I beat myself up but it works unbelievable for pain. They wanted to give me Vicodin, I said no. I only use for night time pain. I questioned several people in recovery including a sponsor and it’s crazy how many people use medical for pain. I am tired of beating myself up. I haven’t had alcohol for 30 months and that’s amazing. Right or wrong - no right answer.

To each their own. I wish I could “control” my smoking. I’m good at controlling for about…a day lol. It always just starts out as “just for this concert”, or just to help me fall asleep”, or “just before going to the beach”, or “just tonight while hanging with friends”, or “just for this movie”, or “just because it’s been a tough day”….
I’ve been obsessed with weed since forever. It always ends up the same. I’m always thinking about getting high. I spend way too much time thinking about it, and trying to control it. Bottom line is i don’t control it, it controls me. I’m 20 plus months removed from smoking it, and yet I still lust for it. Obsession of the mind is real for me.
That may not be the case for everyone. I don’t feel
The same way about cocaine or other substances, so I don’t judge anyone for what they do. I grew up in AA over 30 years ago. I was taught complete abstinence from everything. This time around I’m a lot more open minded to the many paths philosophy. I have been humbled by life, and I don’t know or understand or control much of anything that goes on. Who am I to know the answer to these questions? I only know I’m jelly af that some of y’all can smoke weed and I can’t lol

I really scrutinized this subject as I am sober but take prescription meds as well. I do not smoke marijuana but know many that are "California sober" so I decided to examine the true meaning of sobriety. Webster defines "sober" as "abstaining from drinking alcohol or taking intoxicating drugs : refraining from the use of addictive substances". Now, what does "intoxicating" mean? "Intoxicating" means "liable to intoxication (from alcohol or drugs)." "Intoxication" means the state of being intoxicated. "Intoxicated" means " drunk or under the influence of drugs". Now is marijuana truely considered a drug? Is it a medicine? Is it addictive? You see how grey this area gets? Cannabis is comprised of many compounds that can be considered both "drugs" and "medicine" and its "addictiveness " is also highly contested as being only mental addiction and not physical addiction, if that even. Point is, it's subjective as he ll defining these terms and assigning which to Cannabis...so it's a personal view as is their journey of sobriety. One just needs to be honest with themselves to be "sober"...in my opinion, obviously, because that ain't the definition... Are you using the cannabis as a medicine to alleviate symptoms or are you overindulging to get high? Are you able to go a prolonged period without use if symptoms aren't particularly bad or otherwise? It's a case-by-case basis and this broad condemnation of cannabis by the teetotalers is an obsolete viewpoint. Cannabis is used as a medicine far more than many prescription drugs we consider "medicine". But it has the potential to be abused and perhaps addictive (can't get into that can of worms at this point :joy:). A person just has to be honest with themselves. If they are using it as prescribed or just to alleviate symptoms then I feel they are "sober" by definition unsullied by the California part. If they are using cannabis past Rx , or beyond the control of symptoms, or just to essentially get high, then, of course, they are not "sober" by definition.

In my opinion and what I’m learning in recovery is that an addict who continues to use is not in recovery. NA believes in abstinence from all drugs/alcohol.
