Sometimes I think about how I ended up as bad

Sometimes I think about how I ended up as bad as I became ….. I used to be able to drink alcohol maybe once a week and then sometimes go weeks without ever drinking again ….. then I hit my late 20s and started drinking pretty much everyday … now I’m about to be 37 and I’m in recovery….. sometimes it feels great to admit I’m a alcoholic and in recovery but then sometimes I feel embarrassed to tell someone that I don’t drink because I’m a drunk

You don’t owe anyone an explanation why you don’t drink! A person who would make you feel bad or embarrassed about your sobriety has their own issues and should be avoided.

It doesn't matter what age you find recovery, it's never too early or too late. The main thing is that you've found it and you want it. Embrace it and grow, don't be one of those that use it until life gets better and then they stop

It’s getting easier for me to tell people I don’t drink because I have no limit but I feel you Joe! I have felt embarrassed but idk I just feel different and don’t feel the shame I once did. You’ll get there too

I just tell people I quit because it was fing up my life, which it was. They can’t say much, because it’s probably fing up there life as well. It takes so much courage to get sober, own it and be proud of it :raised_hands:t2:

There are some people I can be honest about it with and some people I give the simple explanation that I stopped drinking for my health. Which is still very much the truth. It’s okay to be selective about who you speak your truth to. And like someone said already in the comments, take it as a signal when you feel shame around someone..

If someone asks me why I don’t drink I just respond with “I’m not very good at it” and they get the hint. And most the time if someone asks, they aren’t worth your time.
