Does anyone here have a duel diagnosis? The drinking problem is bad enough but that's exacerbated by my mental health issues which in turn contributes to the drinking.
I am a recovering addict, who also suffers with mental health illnesses. Such as depression, anxiety, and borderline personality disorder! I completely understand and agree that it makes things harder! But we can do it! We can recover! In all aspects of life!
I deal with horrible anxiety at times so bad I break out in hives I feel ya...
I deal with it and take medicine for several mental health issues daily and the self medicating only makes it worse. It might help in the moment but later it only gets worse. Just don’t pick up no matter what. Surround yourself with people in recovery and pray that God will help you.
There’s a program called
Dual Recovery Anonymous,
We have them in the Chicago area and their great meetings. The focus on treating your mental illness as well as your addiction together.
Me too. I've been so riddled with anxiety at times that made vomit.
Thanks Paul for sharing as I didn’t know of this resource. I’ll check it out.
I personally think most of us are the same. I’m more of a believer that most of us have a mental disease/disorder that we used alcohol/drugs to cope with. It’s true for me.
Eric, please do, that site has all the info needed, to start your own group. I’m visiting right now in Beach Park , Illinois. We used to have a meeting in Libertyville and Waukegan Illinois. I currently don’t see them on the directory. I’m heading back home to Mesa, Arizona around the 15 of January. If I can further assist please send me a message.

I have ptsd, anxiety, depression and borderline personality disorder. Tomorrow I will be two months sober. I lost my house and some of my animals and had to move in with my parents. Mental health and alcoholism/addiction do NOT pair together! I understand! You can do this!
You are finding yaself. Nobody said it was as going to be easy. Trust me, it’s not and it’s lonely. But you can do it and good luck.
I have severe anxiety and CPTSD. It’s incredibly difficult at times but so much easier tackling the difficulties of mental illness with a sober mind. It may feel lonely but you’re not alone.
It’s a long road. The drinking problem is merely a symptom of deeper issues. We aren’t cured simply by quitting alcohol. We don’t think our way into a better way of living, but actually live our way into a better way of thinking. Some days are better than others, but, at all costs, do not pick up. Go to bed sober and do better tomorrow
Hello Kelli: Yes, I'm dual-diagnosis as well. In 2013 I was diagnosed with MDD; I've been taking Citalopram ever since. Today I have 5 years, two months and one day clean and sober. I regularly attend Narcotics Anonymous meetings. I see a therapist and psychiatrist too. All together it works. I see that you're in New York. There's a lot of resources here. Thank-you for sharing.
Safe travels and thanks again
Yep as a matter of fact I have ADHD, Autism, OCD and Bipolar Disorder. Yes, all four. Was a problem drinker before I quit.
