Speaker meetings opinion

2 yr 9 mo sober I’m finding speaker meetings tiresome. I feel a little guilty not going and supporting my small group, but I’ve heard enough stories. I don’t need to hear about someone’s bottom ever again, sometimes I carry that pain with me after the meeting… that’s the opposite of the reason I attend. I’m all in on open discussion meetings but burned out on hearing sobriety stories. It was helpful at first, now it just reminds me of things I’ve moved on from.

Anyone else?

I agree. Sometimes I like going to first step meetings, as a reminder to myself, but yeah speaker meetings are not my jam

I feel the same. Not to be arrogant but I don't want to hear about/be reminded my past regularly. I mean who would? I want to hear more stories about who people are now.

Yes, and the things that affect us now.

Exactly!

Yeah, not a big fan of them also. Or podcasts. Like the raw nitty gritty. The newcomer breaking down just starting out. That keeps it green for me.

When I got sober.a group would go every Friday night.I liked it a lot .speaker meetings are not every where.:dromedary_camel:

Interestingly, I often have the opposite experience. As far as AA goes, I prefer the speaker meetings to anything else. I love hearing people’s stories to the Nth degree. (Any correlation to that and loving true crime?)
But I can see how it could get old after some time. I am 20 months sober. I do know what you mean about carrying the pain with you afterwards. I sometimes get cravings in meetings hearing people talk about drinking, so that makes sense.

The speaker meetings I like are typically online. With new and different people whom I’ve never met and don’t know about. They are still formulaic but if they keep it to about 10% what they were like, 10% what happened, and 80% what they are like now, I’ll be there every time.
