I have not attended AA but am looking for some tips on what to look for in a sponsor. I feel I’ve hit a point in my sobriety where I need to make friends and have safe connections.
Definitely check out AA then. Go to a bunch of different meetings and stick with the ones you really like.
In my experience, the buddy system of AA far outweighs anything else in that particular program.
Make sure you feel comfortable with that person and it’s ok to fire a sponsor
When choosing a sponsor I think it’s important to find someone you can relate to. Maybe someone with a similar story or similar experiences. The right sponsor is so much more than just a sponsor. As addicts and alcoholics we lack the skills to recognize or maintain healthy relationships. The right sponsor will be your best friend too!!
Meetings are best place to find one. Seek someone that has what you want. Good sobriety and a peace and honesty about them.
First thing is find someone who has done the steps and is willing to take you through them. A sponsor shouldn’t give advice but make suggestions to get you to think. They might have something you admire about them especially an appearance of peace in their life or demonstrating that the promises have come true for them. I suggest some one willing to meet with you in person once a week at a club or in person privately for a hour. Are you ready and willing to do whatever it takes. I wish the best for you!
I see you OD’d and got clean. One thing I suggest is that you really understand that a drug is a drug and drinking alcohol isn’t a good idea either. I’ve seen many people just switch addiction or they continue to spend money, are work aholics, or hoard, or have intimate addiction, or gambling. It’s all the same messing with dopamine. Maybe try some NA meetings in addition to AA if they are available in your area.
Find someone who’s got what you want. Peace, swagger, laughter, whatever.

I've been through 4 sponsors already. The right one will come along as long as you stay open and willing. There are tons of people who volunteer at AA meetings online and in-person. There's even phone lists at some for sober support/sponsorship. Give it a whirl!
Hello Brittney. I been sober since October 2020 and have attended AA for no more than 15-20 times total. It wasn’t for me. I never had a sponsor or start my 12 steps. I quit cold turkey. No detox, no therapy, no counseling. No medication just the will to quit. I was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver and being hospitalized for 5 months did it. Now I’m healthy work every day and lost close to 50 pounds. Hang in there you can do this for your daughter and your family. Especially for yourself. If you need help for advice you can reach out to me anytime. Paul..
