Hello Jessica! Glad you are reaching out and working towards a recovery program.

Approaching someone is scary for me, and I love to speak publicly! Put me in a room one-on-one with a stranger and I freeze up (one of the many reasons, I'm single 14 or so years after a divorce, I digress).

I was told in outpatient treatment to pray on it. Ask for guidance. I was also told working with another is vital otherwise I would die. And I wanted to "graduate" from treatment. I could not without a sponsor.

The great thing is that NO ONE starts their recovery program with a sponsor. EVERYONE had to ask someone for help going through the steps. The times I was asked to be a sponsor I was flattered, this meant that I have something this other person wants. It is true for me, I saw something that I wanted my sponsor had (not money, a house, fancy car, etc).

To be very real, you may get an answer of "no." This might be for a variety of reasons (too many sponsors, a recent relapse, etc). It has been my experience that if this happens, this person may help you find someone else to work with, and not leave you solo.

@jessica325090 Yes, having a sponsor would be beneficial for your sobriety and recovery.
A life run on self-will is not good.

You’re not alone in that feeling. Asking for help can be scary, but most sponsors have been in your shoes and will understand. You got this.

Yes it’s necessary to have a sponsor. Awesome that you asking.
Don’t be nervous, sponsorship is part of the program. And remember, the worst they can say is no. I’ve been turned down when asking. Some folks already have a lot of sponsees or are not ready. Just keep asking around and get one.
