This isn’t my first second third or tenth time around but I was needing some help finding a sponsor. I’ve had sponsors before but they are always a significant amount older than me. I’m 32. I usually do online meetings and in person on mondays but I can’t seem to find anyone in my age group that’s willing or has the experience or being a sponsor. Any insight will help. Thank you
Stop being an ageist. Old school AA people have been through it all, they have seen it all. They are gold mines of support. If you wanna stay sober, dont worry about the age difference! You'll be in good hands.
I’ve never had a sponsor in my age group. What really counts is, do you want what they have?
So I asked do I want what they have.?I’m looking at these guys with good sobriety, peace and serenity in their lives who walk the walk. Yep I want that!
Well, by the grace of God and the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous I have that today.
My current sponsor is the polar opposite of me in most every way. But man oh man is he serine. So I asked, and man am I glad I did. My program has never been so good or so simple.
I’m not being ageist. The sponsors I’ve had have really helped me, I’m not denying that at all and saying I’m ageist is extremely rude. I was just looking for a closer connection that I feel would be more beneficial to me in my journey. My journey is not your journey. It’s ok if I want a sponsor closer to my age. Don’t take it as me trying to offend anyone.
I didn't mean that in a mean way, I should've put a "haha" after it. Sorry, long day.
I appreciate the apology we’re all just trying to do better and get help.
Look for someone that has what you want out of sobriety, I went with someone who had over 20 years of sobriety, which is what I needed at the time.
I want someone more relatable to me. I’ve only had older sponsors so I was just going to try something different this time.
Angie, you mentioned you often do online meetings, can you recommend any? I have limited computer skills so please let me know how I join in the meeting. Thanks
Absolutely download the app “everything AA” and there you can find TONS of zoom meetings! Also aa-alive.net is a chat group meeting that’s pretty awesome if you don’t want to be on camera! Good luck!
I like aa-alive as well. Good group there.
I have a sponsor who is 7 years younger than me but has 5.5 years more sobriety than me. To me it doesn’t matter how old. What matters is that I can relate, hear the message, like what the program is doing for him and that he’s actively working it.
Sometimes older may seem intimidating but usually they are wiser if they have extended sobriety time.
I’ve had two sponsors both almost doubling my age and I’ve worked all of the steps twice I just wanted to try and find someone more relatable and I figure someone closer in age could be that for me. I don’t think it’s the age of the sponsor that failed me at all but I just wanted to try something new and see if someone closer to my age can be more relatable. Either way if I don’t find that I’ll still get a new sponsor.
I’m going to send you a friend request.
Thanks
Anytime! The meetings are 3 times a day 8am, 2pm, and 8pm eastern standard time
