Sponsorship

Why am I so picky in sponsorship. I have had one sponsor at the beginning of my journey, however we went our separate ways. I know I need one, but am I being too picky to avoid getting one? I do struggle with asking for help, and opening up. So, yeah. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The relationship between sponsor and sponsee is something I think special. This is a person that no secret should be kept, so trust is imperative. You need to let your guard down and put your fear and pride in check. I would say don’t be cavalier about it but if there is a man you can vibe well with, like his energy, and think he is trustworthy… give it a chance. What’s the worst thing that happens? You part ways. My sponsor is my guide. He is an open ear and voice of reason when my mind is being unreasonable. Sometimes you need to just take the chance. Good luck man.

Thank you for that input! I greatly appreciate it.

I have a little faith that our hp’s bring the right person into our recovery. But! We’re darn good at taking our will and guiding the ship into rough seas. The pool of available sponsors is vast and infinite, especially with our programs moving to online platforms. I found myself wondering if anyone better was out there? I had to shut that shiii right down, or I’d never find someone to guide me. As addicts we always want more, right? So it seems fitting that we’d fuss over the perfect sponsor. I tried to trust my Hp set it up, and I just had to follow… i don’t get to know whether it will work out or not. I just have to believe it will

Thank you!

Hi Nathan, I’m like this with therapists and sometimes they are a good fit for a while and sometimes they don’t fit at all or I realize I’m not getting what I need. I think it’s good to be selective with these kind of relationships as this is a person you are letting into your life and putting your trust in. That being said it sounds like you might be ready to look around again and I hope you find a great fit!

Yea, I am definitely ready. I just have to be more adamant with doing the leg work to find the proper fit. I think I also struggle with a certain aspect of myself, that makes it difficult trusting another dude.

A good sponsor is one who not only talks talks the talk but walks the walk. They return your phone calls. They take you through the steps. They show up at meetings.
Also, sponsors are not there to baby us. It's really up to us to do the work.

This is one of the primary reasons why Alcoholics Anonymous has become less popular. People want something for nothing. They want sobriety from their phones without human interaction.

I hope you find a good sponsor soon so that you can experience quality sobriety and be all that you were meant to be.
