I don’t have a sponsor. I don’t like 12 step programs. What should I do? Suggestions?
Find another kind of program of recovery, I’ve heard smart recovery is good.
Do it anyway.. In life we have to do some Sht we don’t like , to grow and get our adult sht together. No one said it was easy street.
What don't you like about the 12 steps programs?
Everything in life is based on steps. Building a car, making dinner, wiping your a$$. You can't just do everything at once. Getting/staying sober is no different. If you don't break things down in small pieces, you will be overwhelmed and quit before you even start.
I'm not interested in the 12 steps because they throw religion into it. I'd try a counselor or some sort of sober group meet up. I've been doing ok managing on my own. You don't need to wake up with the shakes to be a alcoholic. Just like you don't need AA to guarantee sobriety. It solely depends on you and your will. Clear out the toxic ppl and triggers. Workout exc. I've been told to journal. I've yet to do it or anything at this moment but still not drinking. I'm personally not drinking right now and it's driven by shame and fear. But whatever helps lol
I'd start by researching recovery options. Pick out ones that are attainable and reach out - inquire. Not only inquire- follow up, and follow through. At some point, if you really want to help yourself- you need to hold yourself accountable for the change. Not just rely on a sponsor. Sometimes, you need to be the one doing the bulk of the work - not anyone else
Ty I'll look into it
That's something to think about
Oh I like journaling but haven't done it in so long. I sometimes like the journal apps you can get with a password
Try Refuge Recovery it’s a Buddhist approach to recovery. There’s lots of online meetings you could go to. That’s what I’m involved in and I’ve been sober for two years.
There are TONS of secular (non religious) AA groups that are legit AA. There is also The Satanic Temple (which is absolutely not religious in any way) Sober Faction. I am an atheist and I am part of these groups.
You are absolutely right thank you we had a big thing at my meeting tonight about a gentleman that had a problem with the wording and that God was in there and he wanted more pronouns and which is fine but it’s the way he went about it he was screaming at the top of his lungs and he scared a lot of people and then we actually have people walk out of the meeting Opinions are like assholes we all have them
Yeah that's a pretty strong reaction, haha. Christians have done their fair share of screaming and beating their chests and carrying on too, for some reason that seems to be acceptable, but whatever, times are changing.
The point is, there is a place for everyone in AA and eceryone is welcime. We all just wanna have better lives. Is AA flawed? Absolutely, how could it not be, it was started by an egomaniac alcoholic in the 30's when it was still acceptable to beat your wife. But the program is a simple one, and god is 100% unnecessary to get/stay sober. Nobody should feel unwelcome for not being a believer. Some AA meetings are totalbible beater sessions and some are completely nonreligious where we only talk about sobriety.
You get in where you fit in, right?
A sponsor is there to take you through the 12 steps. No one starts out excited about 12 step programs. You either want your life to get better or you don’t. Assuming you do, just show up, identify as new, and do the work. If you go through the 12 steps and your life isn’t significantly better, I’ll buy you your first drink.
There are AA meetings for atheist. Your higher power does not have to be God. It could be the chair you’re sitting in….
It depends how you feel when your sober. If your absolutely miserable, the 12 steps are extremely helpful. It’s a lot of work, but you will get tremendous support. AA is not about G.d. People in the program will refer to G.d as their higher power, but it’s basically about aligning yourself with the universal flow.
I tried AA and the steps and it just wasn’t for me. Sobriety is definitely possible without AA. What works for some, may not work for others.
Hey girl and I’m actually googling Refuge Recovery right now. Is there an App?
