I had great results with Naltrexone the first time around. I think consistency is key; the doctor told me to take it at the same time every day if possible.

What dose did you take

I take the Vivitrol injection every month and it's great. If you have insurance it should cover it or most of it and if there is a remaining amount the company that makes the Vivitrol has a copay assistance that covers the rest because it is like 1500.00 a shot. I get headaches often but a couple advil a day and I'm fine. It did kinda block the "runners high" I got from exercise for a while but that eventually came back...I was worried about that.

Naltrexone has worked really well for me. I'd recommend taking it after you eat to help with the nausea and other side effects. You might also want to start off with a lower dose of like 12.5mg or 25mg and work your way up to the full 50mg or however much your doctor prescribed. Also keep in mind that naltrexone typically takes a few months of consistent use to start having a major effect on your drinking. So don't get discouraged if it doesn't work right away, or if your progress seems to wane after a couple weeks.

You should also check out the subreddit alcoholism_medication for advice from other people using naltrexone to quit. It's been a great resource for knowing what to expect. Also the book 'The Cure for Alcoholism: The Medically Proven Way to Eliminate Alcohol Addiction' is great for understanding the medical side of things and seeing the results of the clinical trials where naltrexone has been used.

Naltrexone was helpful for me.
Vivitrol (gave injections to people in the past) can be life saving!

Naltrexone is the generic name for vivitrol. So twins!! The first 2 times I had the injection of it didn't go well. I'm on my third injection as of 4 days ago and no cravings and soon to be 5 days sober. I tried the pill form and that was joke. It worked, but if I wanted to drink I wouldn't take it. Best of luck.

It will help just hung in there

People start with Naltrexone first- to make sure tolerated, then can change to monthly injections if desired

Huh, I tried naltrexine and it didn't do anything for me...but no one told me increasing the dose or that it might take awhile to work.
