Step work finally

It’ll be 8 years for me in July and I’ve never gone past step 5. Today, I made the commitment to getting a new sponsor and working the steps, starting with the basics. Truly looking forward to experiencing that change you only get by working the steps. Has it taken anyone else a long time to finally commit to step work with a sponsor?

I've been stuck in that step forever! I haven't really put enough effort into the steps at all like I've always wanted to.... Since I started using about 7-8 years ago now...sigh

Same!!! Well except I have almost 4 years next month on May 25, 2019, and I never completed the steps either honestly I’d start then stop by the time I was done with step 2 n quit calling my sponsor, I remained clean but just kinda abstinent I guess u can call it, but I’ve recently gotten a new sponsor and restarted my step work! Just finished step 3 last night! Good for u!

That’s awesome dude - I love that step. One of the things that pushed me to do it was that I was tired of hearing people say their lives began to change once they went through the steps lol finally I almost started developing a resentment! Starting at step 1 coming up on 8 years, looking forward to it. Congrats to you!

Sorry, if you don’t mind me asking - did you mean you’ve been stuck on the step since you’ve been sober? Or that you’re currently using (no judgement, took me 5 times)

I've been using almost 8 years but I was for sober 60 days till 2 days ago. I keep using a month then im messing up a night but..... I'm back at it again today. Day 1 again...yay.......

Yep, I can relate to that. Still looking for a sponsor n trying to do step 2 on my own.

Feel free to text me dude. I’m 37, been in and out of the rooms since I was 19. I’ve learned a lot and maybe I can at least give you some inspiration and my experiences. I’ve been in your shoes many times, sometimes it’s just better to talk to someone directly

Best advice I can give you is don’t try to do the steps on your own - it’s almost like a new job you have no experience with, you’re going to need guidance, always remain teachable - and go to speaker meetings, that’s how I found my sponsor. Listen to people telling their stories and you’ll hear yours I promise you. You’ll know that person is the right one to be your sponsor

Totally relatable. Took me 11 years from my first meeting to do the work. Do the work, get the results, help others with your experience. Good luck.

Yeah dude, started getting a resentment against others (when in reality it was towards myself) always saying that’s when they noticed the real change in their lives. My whole life I’ve been comfortable with just “settling for okay”. Looking forward to changing that

Ty. I'm still looking for a sponsor. I've found a few but their plates were so full that I didn't get the time I need. I don't believe I'm needy but I require safety in knowing they'll be there when I need them the most. The search continues.
