Struggling today because the 4th was always a big drinking

Struggling today because the 4th was always a big drinking holiday. The sun, the sand, the surf, bbq and booze all went together. It seems like every person on the planet is loaded but me. I know I won’t drink, but I get extremely depressed on these days. All my demons come back to haunt me.

Thanks for being brave enough to share. I've been in a "moping" mood, too so that means it is time to get up and moving! Loaded does not mean full...full of hope, adventure and authenticity as the sober man that you are. Dude, if you've got a beach today I'm sooo envious!!! Do some chillaxin on my behalf, if so. Keep being real!

I’m a 13 months sober and there are places I won’t even go to because of the memories. I wonder when I will be comfortable going on a boat.

I made it through the day sipping nothing stronger than lemonade and decaf coffee!
If I can offer up a personal ray of hope to everyone, it’s this:
The anticipation of the event is harder to deal with than the actual event. Once I get there, I find that my apprehension of the social situation is what makes me want to drink the most. When I get there and grab a soda, a water or whatever, and start mingling, the apprehension goes away. I know this, but the apprehension is still there beforehand. Thanks for all the words of encouragement. Just knowing I’m not alone in this helps!

If we can stay sober on July 4th we can take on any day! And the people on this thread stayed sober so you’re not the only one!

Lol just remember it's not the end of the world for a drinker like me I was already pre drinking 2 days before July 4 just like I did on most of my holidays...
