When it comes to sober friends, realistically I have none yet. I’m 23 so most of my close friends are users so temptation is always there. They know I’m attending meetings but they don’t have much faith that I’ll commit. I’m only on day 2 but I’d love to connect with more sober people here. I’m always free to chat and if it helps I’m from Chicago so maybe we can attend a meeting together?
Hey Vic! If your friends don’t have faith in you succeeding that says more about them than you. Also, even though AA works great for some it isn’t for everyone. Try out other things and see what resonates with you. SMART recovery is another option. Good luck! You are in such a great position to get sober at 23! Our Approach – SMART Recovery
Get to the meetings 20 min early & stay 20 min late. This is when you find the winners & you can make those friendships. Also, alano clubs throughout the city & suburbs regularly have activities for social networking.
Check out the Mustard Seed, 5555 club, west side alano & the Anona East in suburban Villa Park. You'll meet like minded people who still know how to have fun, but sober.
One of the big changes of sobriety is changing your playgrounds & playmates. Not to worry though, things get better. If you stick around, you'll make real friends that will last a lifetime.
Celebrate recovery is one.
I've done Celebrate Recovery, it's pretty good if you're looking for something explicitly Christian
