Surgery

I have been sober for a little bit now, but am struggling with the fact of having surgery next Thursday. Its an acl repair surgery but they are afraid there might be some possible damage to my meniscus as well since ive been walking on it and using it since the injury occurred at the end of September. I have people who support me but that is still so hard for me to accept. Im scared! Scared of the surgery itself, scared of taking painkillers after, but mostly scared of not being able to go to IOP and meetings for awhile. Any advise is appreciated.

First off, I wish you a successful surgery and a speedy recovery. I know a lot of people in recovery that refuse painkillers after medical procedures. That is a very personal choice and I won't advocate that you do that. I would make sure that you have someone reliable that can "ration" them out and make sure that you take them as directed. I would see if your IOP can make accommodations for you. Maybe Zoom if you can't go in person. Same with meetings. I know that Zoom isn't the same as in person, but it's better than nothing.

Thank you, I appreciate the support. I do intend to take the painkillers if needed and have people who will gladly keep count and be there for me for accountability. They have also volunteered to make meals and bring a meeting to me and that will be utilized for sure. Unfortunately I have spoken to my IOP program and while they will hold my place they cannot do anything virtually in the classroom. I fully intend to keep my weekly zoom appointments for therapy and work hard in physical therapy so I can get back home and back to everything I love about sobriety as quickly as possible, while trying hard to give myself grace.
