Recovery isn't always linear. What strategies do you use to avoid or bounce back from setbacks and keep moving forward?
I have not had a setback in regards to drinking for over 600 days now-so that is good!
To move forward, I try to remain in, within this present moment.
I have anxiety ( part of why I used to drink as often as I did ).
I get overwhelmed easily.
So, I try and remember to breathe, take deep breaths, realize that this moment is it.
I also remember how I felt the morning that I decided to get sober ( this most recent time ).
I hated myself and I never want to feel that way again…so, right…I remember that awful feeling and for the periodic cravings…
I play the tape forward.
What about you, Nicholas?
Life is not linear. We in recovery tend to forget that. Normal people without the isim deal with these things without turning to drugs and alcohol.
My strategy is simple. I practice a set of principles that remove my ego from my decision making process These are found in the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. Aka the 12 steps and twelve traditions.
