Everything becomes a myth long enough so believe what makes thou happy. Much like Fox Mulder I want to believe, but I would believe for hypocritical reasons if I did. I would believe out fear of bad place or the desire to live in the good place. That to me at least is the incorrect manner to conduct oneself. I break it down like this. It is like going to the speed limit to avoid a ticket not because it is just the correct manner to do stuff so you don't injury yourself or others. It is also like donating to charity for the tax write off. How humble of thee to do both.

He is referring very briefly to the history of religion, namely various cults of paganism including early Christianity, and the conservative political move by Constantine to subsume Christianity into state sanctioned religious practice, paving the way for modern day Christianity. The rest of it refers to his inability or reluctance to “believe” because of his personal ethics, logic, etc.
