The 12 Steps

How do you know that it’s time to move on to the next step? If you relapse during the steps should you start over?

Gm. Get a sponsor to take you through the steps. They will guide you and help you….stay sober🙏

What if a sponsor relapsed?

Get a new one. I know that much. Contagion

You know what the right thing to do is. Your sobriety must be the most important thing in the world. Sobriety can give you a great life. For an alcoholic it will save your life. Don’t pick up no matter what, go to a meeting, and look for a new sponsor. You’ll be OK.

I’m not planning on using. I’m just not trying to get passed around. I guess there is no guarantee. Thank you ARS.

Most steps have a natural completion, though I completely agree that working with a sponsor is essential. If your sponsor relapsed try hard not to get codependent. Let them work with their sponsor on rebuilding and resuming their program while you find someone new to lead you on yours.

My sponsor is moving to the coast soon, and will be 2 hours away. I will probably get another sponsor locally to check in with due to this.

Thank you Craig. There’s so much to think about.

Get the Big Book. Start reading it. It’ll keep you occupied and it will answer a lot of questions for you. Read the chapter called “ The doctors opinion”. It helped me fully understand and accept that I have a disease. And I was able to move forward and know that I had a treat it accordingly. Follow the program of AA and everything will be OK. Just don’t pick up a drink no matter what. If you feel like you have to call someone or start doing something to take your mind off it. You will find that in 10 minutes the urge can pass. But you must do something to take your mind off using until the urge goes away.

I’m 94 days sober.

Get a new sponsor

The only guarantee is that if you don’t pick up your life will get better not worse. The only guarantee is if you do pick up your life will get progressively worse. In early sobriety when it was hard to stay sober or to not think about it, I told myself that every time I had those thoughts or feelings. Going to AA meetings can help you in many ways. Maybe most importantly is that we alcoholics need to be reminded of how life was when we were drinking. I know people sober 30 or 40 years who have to always be reminded that they are an alcoholic with an allergy to alcohol and if they pick up a drink life will get bad.

First, have a sponsor who has what you want. Working together you two will go through each step & your sponsor will let you know when to move forward.... As far as relapsing while working the steps, no sense in moving forward if you can't get step 1.
That is an odd question, you planning on doing more research?

This post is so old. I posted this before I found my current sponsor. My current sponsor has what I want. Everything is going good. Thanks Steve.
