Tonight, I played the first song I’ve written in over 15 years and the only song I’ve ever written in sobriety. It’s about a piece of a friend’s drunk log told to me and was amazing to play on stage at a benefit concert with my local gay men’s chorus with him in the audience. It was a totally different feeling walking up to the mic without a substance to calm my nerves, but I did it anyway and that is the true gift of sobriety. The ability to handle stuff on my own without filtering out the discomfort.
