The Woman, the Phone Call, and the Address

A woman called customer service, convinced her bill was wrong.

Before anyone could begin fixing the problem, frustration spilled over. Harsh words filled the conversation, directed at the voice on the other end of the line.

The representative remained calm.

She didn’t argue.
She didn’t match the energy.
She simply asked, “Can you please verify your address?” (I thought uhhhhh ohhh, INSANE)

As I watched, I realized something.

The person answering the phone didn’t create the bill.
They didn’t set the rates.
They didn’t make the mistake.

They were simply the bridge between the problem and the solution.

It made me wonder…

How often do we unload our pain on the nearest person instead of the responsible one?

And how often is the person receiving our anger carrying burdens we know nothing about?

Maybe they just buried a loved one.
Maybe they’re struggling to make ends meet.
Maybe they’re fighting a battle they haven’t told a soul about.

For all we know, our words could become the weight that breaks an already heavy heart.

Kindness doesn’t excuse mistakes, and accountability still matters. But the way we treat people while seeking a solution says just as much about us as the problem itself.

The next time life hands you the wrong bill, the wrong order, or the wrong answer…

Remember that the person answering the phone is often there to help, not to hurt.

Sometimes the greatest strength isn’t raising your voice.

It’s choosing to keep your humanity while asking for what you need.
