We are all ready when we're ready. I was an everyday heavy drinker.
A few years ago at age 46 I admitted myself to the hospital after I woke up and looked in the mirror while brushing my teeth and saw that I was all jaundice. I was 300 lbs type two diabetic on insulin.
I had a blockage in my urethra and my kidneys backed up. I was in the hospital for 8 weeks then in a nursing facility for an additional 5 months!
When I got out I did not listen to my family and my nephrologist to move into sober living. I moved right back where I was before. "I'll be fine. I just won't drink". I did not work a program and 6 months later I was back to my old ways. You would think spending 7 months in the hospital and learning how to walk again just might be enough motivation.
It took me another 18 months to finally surrender. I moved into sober living and started working this thing like my life depends on it. BECAUSE IT DOES!
I had a couple of hiccups in my journey, but I use them as learning experiences to try to determine what was missing.
My latest relapse was on a business trip for work. It only lasted one night. That was my longest stink in sobriety. 15 months. I had a few sponsees that did not work out and didn't keep trying. Focused more on work and working out (dropped 100 lbs).
My message to everyone: Stay in the middle of this thing! Stay involved. Keep service commitments. Sponsor others.
I have a new sponsee right now and man does it feel good to help him on his journey.
Ok, enough from me...
