This is hard. This is day 0. I don’t know that I can quit. I sit here with a drink in my hand, knowing I want to quit… but can’t. It’s affecting my life and it’s affecting me.
Hi Jessica, you have to decide if you want the drink more or if you want sobriety more. With the drink there may be temporary relief, but long term consequences. With sobriety, there is breakthrough and freedom. Only you can make this decision, but there are people here to support you.
Girl u got the support right here! Just make a list of things that you want to stop drinking for. And when u want to drink look at the list and remind urself this too shall pass. It’s easier said then done don’t get me wrong. I’m struggling just as much as you only I smoke weed instead of drinking but we are still addicts. I’ve also tried some meetings and they help. Try taking a walk and getting fresh air. It sounds dumb but it’s really helped me to not use.
You gotta want it before help can come. Up to you. No one gonna hold your hand. You are however taking the first step. Letting your intentions be known.
Please put it down. If you are not going to meeting, check them out. It helps a lot. I really didn’t want to go, but it makes all the difference. You can do this, but you will probably need help.
Just take it one day at a time. Twenty four hours at a time or an hour at a time. You’re putting too much stress on yourself by picturing the the future without booze when you only need to concern yourself with the right now.
When you're thinking about picking up a drink what you're really doing is "Believing The Lie; that this time things will be different. But they never are. And the wheel goes round and round and round. In Alcoholics Anonymous we call it the Insidious cycle of insanity.
Sooner or later you're going to have to be willing to walk through the pain. The trick is not walking through the pain alone. This is why we have meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous, a sponsorship program and a phone to call people when we are struggling. Download an app on your phone called Meeting Guide and this will help you find meetings in your area.
Trust me, I know what the first hour the first day the first week the first month feels like. There's a whole life out there waiting to be lived but you have to be willing to start with day number one and put the cap on the bottle.
Treatment was the only option for me personally
I’ve tried on my own before and soon enough went back to drinking. It wasn’t cause I was weak. I didn’t know I had Alcoholism. I didn’t really know what alcoholism is. I also needed to find my rock bottom. Today I know more about alcoholism and the effects on my life, my health and those lives around me. And with that I won’t to be sober. I want to help others.
I’m right there with you, I couldn’t put it down, I have 2 days and sometimes have to take it 5 minutes at a time, the beginning is hard but like Dave said we have to walk through the pain! Your in the right place nice support here💚
Try to visualize a sober life. Don’t focus on the negative. Focus on the positive. What does a life free of the pain look like? What does it look like to be free and healthy and vibrant? What does it look like to have good relationships and productivity? Is it worth change? Is it worth being open and willing? Find the help you need to make that change. Is it going to take courage? Yup. Is it going to take humility? Emm hmm. When the pain is greater than the fear of change, we make a change. Are you there yet?
I felt EXACTLY the same 56 days ago. Several people who are important it to suggested detox and rehab. I FINALLY listened. It saved my life. Maybe it can save yours too…
That’s what I’m trying to figure out. I would be classified,I supposed, as a functional alcoholic. I can go all day… as long as I am busy. But the moment I’m done… I want a drink. I felt enough to reach out… but I know it’s going to be a battle. I just hope I win
Thank you!
Real alcoholics are never functional in the end. It always gets worse never better for a true alcoholic. Most of us couldn’t get sober until we found out that we will never “figure it out”. I’m not trying to discourage you. You can do it, but it really hard (nearly impossible) to do it on your own (if you are a true alcoholic).
Oh. This is why I’m reaching out. I have noticed a trend. And I’m drinking more and more in less periods of time to just feel “buzzed”. I’m accounting for myself because I know it’s not good. It’s also why I reached out for help.
It’s freaking baffling isn’t it? I’m glad you are looking for help. It’s such an important step. I tried so hard to do it myself, but it wasn’t getting better. I went to rehab which was life changing, then I found people to take care of me and show me the way in the rooms off AA. My life is an absolute miracle. Just amazing (two years sober). Find the people you need to take care of you and show you the way, Jessica.
